  • opened with minutes of previous meeting January 16, 2008
  • Mrs. Higgs sent a letter to Burt Valvo’s daughter regarding the law office. Inquiring the possibility of purchasing the building for use as the Historical Museum. No response has been received.
  • No response from Kathy Young regarding the depot grant still being honored. Mrs. Higgs did a follow up inquiry.
  • Historical Society to present a powerpoint program in the late spring to the public. Date has not been set. This program will give a history of the town and surrounding areas with a slide show of historical pictures. Plans are still incomplete.
  • Donation tiers tabled until more members are present to finalize tier titles.

Forestville Area Historical Society, October 17th, 2007

The Forestville Area Historical Society met on October 17th, 2007 for their monthly meeting.

The Historical Society had a display set up at the Apple Festival held in Forestville on September 29th and 30th. The display included pictures and memorabilia of Forestville and its surrounding areas in an effort to draw interest in the preservation of the area history. Memberships to the society can be purchased. If you are interested in joining, please contact Frank Schneider at  965-4140 or Betty Higgs at the Village Clerks office 965-2921.

George Sinclair was appointed as the Vice President. Current officers are Frank Schneider-president, George Sinclair-vice president, Kelly Pfleuger-secretary, and Betty Higgs-treasurer.

The November and December meetings will be combined into one meeting held December 5th, 2007 at 7:00pm, due to the holidays. Anyone interested in attending the meeting is welcome. They are held at the Forestville Municipal.

  • Memberships purchased from now until the end of the year will be good for this year and all of 2008. After 2008 memberships purchased will be good through December 31 of the year it is purchased.
    • Founding member Tier plaque will consist of 5 tiers
      • Top tier 5 - donations of $1,000.00 or more
      • 4th tier $500.00 to $999.99
      • 3rd tier $300.00 tp $499.99
      • 2nd tier $100.00 to $299.99
      • 1st tier $25.00 to $99.99

  • no further information received regarding grant money or Society Charter
  • Vice President Jim Everhart has been absent from meeting since before April 1, 2007. He will be approached to find out if he wishes to continue in the position of Vice President. If he does not, he will be asked to submit his resignation. In the event he does not do so his position will be replaced at next months meeting.
  • Stone to commemorate the 2008 Bicentennial of Forestville is still being sought. Donations will be taken from anyone wishing to contribute to the engraving of the stone

  • Discussion on Founding members continued from previous meeting. Possible options for Tier levels and appointed names for tiers. Tabled for further options and discussion.
  • Frank contacted Art Dolce regarding setting up a booth at the Apple Festival free of charge for Historial Society membership display. Art approved the fee to be waived. Frank will bring selections from his personal collection and any others who wish to display. Display will be set up for Saturday September 29th only.

  • Opened with minutes from previous meeting
  • Received letter in response to charter packet sent. Letter indictates the process is underway.
  • Received letter from Kathy Young regarding the grant money. More information will be coming soon to confirm if we can keep the grant money.
  • Question regarding the amount of meetings a trustee is allowed to miss and still keep his/her position.
  • Depot has sold to private individual. Mike will be checking to see who purchased it to approach them regarding the ticket booth.
  • Frank will contact Art Dolce regarding the Apple festival
  • Betty Higgs purposed an idea to do a talk on the history of Forestville in an effort to bring awareness to the community, draw in interest and possible donations. This would be done in the late fall when Frank Schneider is available to speak.
  • Membership cards designed by Mike Mierzwa were viewed and motion to approve them was made by George St. Clair, second by Kelly Pfleuger
  • Application form designed by Sheridan Historical Society was considered to use for our own format. Mike Mierzwa will complete one for approval. Motioned by George St. Clair, second by Kelly Pfleuger.
  • Historical Society will use the existing web site for Forestville to display the Society information. Web address is www.forestvilleny.com
  • Founding members recognition board discussed. Members are to collect information from other organizations for ideas in how to display and how much to charge for various level/tiers.
  • Seeking information regarding the Erie railroad tressels. Who has ownership of various parcels. A rock wanted to use for the bicentenial marker is on this tressel and we need to know who can give permission to take it.

  • Charter Packet was not sent after last months meeting due to missing  signatures and paperwork. Need trustee signatures and Bios.
  • Appointed Tom Woodward as a trustee
    •  motioned by George St Clair
    •  second by Betty Higgs
  • Amy Rogers called Kelly Pfleuger asking if there was any possibility the Depot could be considered for the Museum location. This message was relayed to the group and the reasons were again given as to why this location can not be considered.
    Among these reasons, but not limited to are the following,  Cost to restore the Depot would be unobtainable, possible hazardous waste contamination, back taxes. 
  • A call was received from  Bill Parments office to Frank Schneider regarding the letter sent requesting consideration for the Railroad grant. They verified the letter  was received and it would be reviewed and responded to at a later time.
  • Membership cards were discussed. Mike will work on layout and send sample to be viewed. Official name to appear on cards will be “Forestville Area Historical Society”. Possibly have a logo appear on the card as well.
  • Begin soliciting for members at upcoming events such as the “Alumni Banquet”,  “Apple Festival”. Kelly will contact Sharon Smith regarding the Alumni banquet.
    • Memberships taken at this time will go into effect January 1, 2008. After that date all memberships accepted will be for the remainder of the year in which it is taken only. The membership year will run from January 1 to December 31.
    • discussed various fund raiser ideas and grant possibilities, but will discuss this to more detail after the charter is officially in place.
    • discussed cost comparison of constructing a new building for the museum verses an existing structure of historical value.
    • Mike Mierzwa to organize a website for the historical society

  • Opened meeting with previous meetings minutes.
  • Received a letter back from Charter regarding organizing a Historical Society. Paperwork that had been sent needed additional information. Signatures were not notarized.
  • There has been no further information received regarding the depot grant money.
  • Millie Becker presented a letter she prepared to further persuade the company offering depot grant. 
  • Update on Alumni Banquet. A booth was set up with information regarding the Historical Society along with a display of pictures, postcards and Forestville related memorabilia. Response was minimal to the society, but receptive to the display. 
  • Treasurers report.  
    • Beginning balance  $200.00
    • Charter fee  $100.00
    • Ending balance - $100.00
  • Further discussion regarding the Apple Festival. Plans to set up a table with artifacts of Forestville, possible with hands on display. Solicit Historical Society memberships.
  • Suggestion to place ad in Bicentennial Booklet advertising the Historical Society was made by Frank Schneider.
